Jeremy Vine introduces BBC Radio 2's audio journey through the years from 1951 to 2000, helping listeners to relive the music, news, radio, TV and movies of the times. Sounds of the 20th Century is an audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia in 50 hour-long episodes. Each programme is dedicated to one year from 1951 to 2000 and features nothing that wasn't heard, seen or read at the time. There's no hindsight, no "I-heart-the-80s"-style reminiscences; just the music, the news, the radio, the TV and the movies as they were first experienced.

Part 39 - 1989

Jeremy Vine introduces an audio collage of 1989 featuring the music, news and trivia that defined the end of a decade. It's a tumultuous year in Europe, with the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the so-called "velvet revolution" across the former soviet bloc. Further afield there are protests in Tiananmen Square against the Chinese government whilst, at home, it's the year of the Hillsborough disaster and the Exxon Valdez. In the charts Stock, Aitken & Waterman dominate, with number one singles by Kylie, Jason Donovan, Donna Summer, Sonia and more.

Part 40 - 1990

Radio 2's audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia reaches a new decade, as Jeremy Vine introduces 1990. England make it to the World Cup Semi Final to meet West Germany, but lose on penalties, Paul Gascoigne sheds those famous tears and Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma hits the pop charts worldwide. There are celebrations in an officially re-unified Germany and in South Africa for the release of Nelson Mandela, but elsewhere in the world there's despair in Kuwait, as Iraqi forces invade following accusations of "slant drilling". In the UK the country is gripped by Mad Cow disease and Margaret Thatcher stands down as prime minister in a tearful farewell speech. And, at the cinema, we're all gripped by the tale of a Pretty Woman.

Jeremy Vine introduces an audio collage of 1992, the Queen's "annus horribilis". The world witnesses the start of the Bosnian War, the Olympic torch shines in Barcelona and, in the city, the pound has its darkest day - Black Wednesday. In politics, there are upsets in the elections on both sides of the Atlantic, as Labour's Neil Kinnock fails to defeat the incumbent PM John Major, whilst US Democratic candidate Bill Clinton sweeps into White House as George H. W. Bush exits. On the radio, Whitney Houston's theme to The Bodyguard breaks records and REM are nominated for seven Grammy Awards. And we're introduced to a whole new vocabulary by the film Wayne's World.
