In zijn boek "Ships in troubled water" omschrijft hij het als volgt: "Caroline had a broadcastingteam, the majority of whom had never been in a radio studio before, whose propriety on the air was poor, to say the least". Vaak daarna dezelfde stormtape...Sweet memories..... :)GroetHenk Kruize

As I have listened to the recordings, I notice there were indeed quite a few off-colour jokes told and even once or twice a criticism of the Viewpoint programmes (i.e. their main paying advertiser). Also sometimes the DJs said things that clearly made absolutely no sense at all. There was a competition promo (voiced by Rico, no less) played regularly where one of the prizes announced was "an LP from the Opportunity Knocks winner Brenda Russell".Except it was Brenda Cochrane who won Opportunity Knocks in 1989. (Brenda Russell is the American famous for "Piano in the Dark" in 1988 and has been a singer since the 1960s).So you might say there were some "quality control" issues (probably because there was no programme controller after Nigel left), but I'm not sure what is meant by the statement that most DJs "had never been in a radio studio before", though?Rico, Chris Frisco, Jerry Wright, Andy Bradgate, Nick Jackson and Ricky Jones are all excellent DJs.Jerry Wright started on Caroline in 1986, Andy Bradgate: Caroline from 1988 and Nick Jackson: Caroline from January 1989.Rico had previously been a DJ on the Voice of Peace and Ricky Jones had a previous career at Radio Invicta (the legal station for Kent)! Not sure about Chris Frisco's background before Caroline or where he is now. Possibly he had never been in a radio studio before, but he was a very good DJ indeed.Johnny Blackburn wasn't too bad (had previously done hospital radio), but too many of his links relied on "dad jokes" that he clearly took from a Tony Blackburn joke book... he needed to give that up!Chris Adams was also not so bad, although he was always having trouble with the studio equipment (records at wrong speeds, usually). He was also on the Voice of Peace previously.Victor Hartman always seemed a little less "polished", sometimes criticised on-air much of what he was playing and apparently prone to using obscenities on air (one of the recordings features him shouting a profane insult, possibly picked up by the stylus!). He had been an engineer for the Voice of Peace in the late 1970s and a DJ on short-wave pirate radio stations around the same time. Which just proves that how long someone has had experience in a radio studio doesn't really mean all that much.Very few were of the style you mention ("Caroline 558" and just the name of the songs/artists)... Louise Roberts? She was Nick Jackson's girlfriend... mainly serving as the Ross cook, but she did some shows in the middle of the night. Paul West? He wasn't on air very long and almost nothing is known about him. Tony Kirk? Rarely heard in 1990 except for the odd storm tape.Maybe you could elaborate? Because it's not true that only Rico was the only good DJ at the time (although he was obviously one of the best).Honestly, I think Radio Caroline sounded excellent in the spring of 1990... almost as good as before the mast collapse.
September 15, 2025Sep 15 Popular Post Het was de mining van NIgel Harris6 uur geleden zei Lightkeeper:Maybe you could elaborate?
