Broadcast 16 September 2006, Radio 2 BBC-R2-20060916-TheMonkeesStory On 12 September 1966 a small piece of pop history took to the airwaves when The Monkees arrived on American television screens. The group touched millions across the world with their series and infectious music, much of it written by the finest songwriters of the time. Love or hate them, the "American Fab Four" became a phenomenon. Mark Radcliffe digs deep into the Monkee story, revealing that the advert placed by the producers appealing for the four group members was only answered by one of the four boys. The four new recruits were thrown into weeks of improv' classes while scriptwr…

Frustrerend is zoiets. LBC launched on October 8th 1973 with Capital following 8 days later. Initial reaction to their arrival was not good with some politicians wanting for instance "to put LBC out of its misery" but on the very last day of the year Radio Clyde launched in Glasgow and was an instant success; Commercial Radio was up and running. Very quickly LBC and Capital were revamped and the impact of commercially funded radio spread across the whole of the UK. Part One looks at the development of ad funded radio aimed at the UK, and the progress to the launch of the first two stations; London's LBC and Capital Radio Part 1: BBC-R2-20131205-2300-0000-Established1973-40YearsOfComme…

Part 1: We'll Meet Again - Britain in World War II Beginning an epic new series charting the history of modern Britain in 50 records, Stuart Maconie considers The Force's Sweetheart, Vera Lynn, and her own musical part in the fight against fascism. We hear from those who lived through WW2 - both those serving in the Armed Forces and those on the Home Front - and discover the significance of music during the war years and how it kept the force's spirits up whilst comforting those waiting anxiously at home. Some families were further strained and stretched because not only were the men fighting overseas, but the children had been evacuated to the safer confines of th…
