BBC Local Radio 1967: Pop Went the Pirates

Via Felixstowe and Offshore Radio on Facebook:

"We have posted clips of this before, but now you can listen to the entire radio programme entitled 'Pop went the Pirates' by following the links below. It was made in 1967 by the late Andy Wright, ex-Felixstowe resident, who worked for the BBC, mainly in local radio.
The programme was inspired by Andy's brother, Charles, who made many tape recordings of offshore radio around that time. Andy was able to use the facilities of the BBC, including the use of Radio 3 announcer Victor Hallam to make a professional quality programme which was eventually broadcast on several BBC local radio stations, but never made the Network as it was deemed too pro-pirate at the time!"

I see more and more people using soundcloud, which does not let me download the programs.

This prevents me from listening to it when and where I want, in fact you can only listen real time.

And, yes I can record it, but still I need to play it real time.

Is there a particular reason?

This is a great documentary for those who have adored,

and still adore the ‘’Offshore Radio Stations’’.

Thank you very much for sharing a fantastic Radio Flashback!

In this case I presume Mike simply copied the links he found on a facebook page.

As for the reason, I'm not sure. My guess is, streaming has become more popular over time. People like to listen to music and watch movie clips on the internet, without necessarily wanting to own it. Especially on Facebook. Why would you, if you can be online all day? Not everyone is a collector.

You can even store your own material online these days, 'in the cloud'. Having an external hard drive is not as important as it used to be.

As Paul says I copied a message posted this morning on Facebook.

Soundcloud was established for musicians to promote their music. Anyone can use it, I've uploaded some jingle files and audio snippets myself to embed them in offshore radio Facebook groups, but the vast majority of uploads are tracks from musicians, some are for free download, some are just for streaming and on some there is a purchase or pre-order button.

In this case the uploader has only chosen to make the programme available for streaming. All the Soundcloud links I posted from the BBC Ottringham on the BBC Dutch WW2 broadcasts had a download option.

If you search there are Soundcloud download software/websites available, just as there are for YouTube, but I don't know how reliable they are.

Thanks for the insight.

I am a collector, but I also like to listen to old programs off-line, like on the bike or on a USB stick in the car.

Certainly informative programs, music I have enough :D.
