Radio Seagull September 24 1973 21:01-00:06 Tony Allan

Tony is een ietwat verkouden. De datum van uitzending is bij mij niet bekend. Tony zegt dat het twee weken na de Beatles Contest (dat was op 10 September) is, Robin schreef dat het op de 23-ste kan zijn uitgezonden. Tony draait van een LP van Caravan, die pas op 5 oktober 1973 gereleased werd. Die avond ging Andy Archer naar Scheveningen en hij werd opgehaald door een jonge man met de naam Peter. In het programma leest ene Mike twee keer een gedicht voor.

Dat was "Mike the poet" ofwel Mike Wall-Garland. Een Engels bemanningslid van de Mi Amigo in de periode 16 Juni 1973 tot 3 Mei 1974. Later na zijn Caroline periode werd hij chauffeur. Helaas kwam hij bij een auto ongeluk in Italie, op 17 December 1975 om het leven.

I had no luck in finding any reference to the result of the Beatles competition in my usual resources. Certainly end of September between the 24th and the mast coming down on October 1st. Note they were closing at 0300 which they did until Johnny Jason returned at the end of the month.

I have a couple of airchecks of Tony opening Seagull for the evening. I assume the dates are correct.

According to Monitor magazine Andy Archer presented his last programme on the 1973 Radio Seagull on 23rd September. If Tony talks about Andy leaving the ship that day then I would say it is indeed the 24th September. Andy was on 2100-2300 on the 23rd September followed by Tony from 2300-0100. If Andy then left the ship it is possible that Tony presented 2100-0000 on the 24th.

That's great research, Ian. Thanks very much! I just came across a couple of Downloadclub mp3's from September 23/24 that I downloaded in 2003 and 2004. I have not been able to find anything yet that is the same as in this recording. September 24th 1973, it is!

Interesting Douwe. I will have a listen to the recording. It’s good to piece it all together after all these years! I think the date is wrong on this as at 8:45 Andy is about to play the Beatles and he mentions you might hear the song on Monday night between 9 and 5. So this recordings is days before the Beatles special on 10th September.

In the original (downloadclub) download description/title, Tony Allan was mentioned and not Andy Archer and that was also wrong.
