'' Long before today’s DJs connected with their audiences through social media, communication with listeners took place through letters and postcards.

Whether participating in programmes, requesting songs, asking for merchandise and autographs, offering suggestions or simply expressing their appreciation, listeners from around the world sent thousands of handwritten and typed letters to the DJs of Radio Luxembourg.

Many of these letters came from behind the Iron Curtain. During the Cold War, listening to Western broadcasts was discouraged or prohibited in much of Eastern Europe.

Nevertheless, many listeners tuned in using homemade or improvised receivers. Signal interference and technical limitations often made reception difficult, but many listeners tuned in nonetheless. Despite the risk of attracting the attention of the authorities or secret services, listeners in the East wrote to their favourite DJs just as Western fans did, requesting songs, autographs and merchandise.

Through Radio Luxembourg, they gained access to Western music and media, and with it a sense of connection to a wider world.

Although Radio Luxembourg was immensely popular across Europe, its signal travelled far beyond the continent.

Letters arrived from around the world, including the United States, India and many other countries.

Many listeners stayed awake late into the night or rose in the early hours of the morning to tune in to their favourite programmes. Some also included detailed reception reports alongside their messages.

The correspondence illustrates that, while the signal originated in a small country at the heart of Europe, Radio Luxembourg attracted audiences across continents and cultures.''

En dan te bedenken dat de zender s avonds s nachts op de UK gericht stond. Dus achter de antenne kwam nog meer dan genoeg signaal om het Oostblok te bereiken.

Er zijn nu journalisten die met info voor Rusland het land, of in ieder geval Moskou of St Petersburg proberen te bereiken.

Dat kan met de 208 vanuit Luxy, als er maar geld komt. En dat is er genoeg, voor defensie zijn miljarden uitgetrokken, enkele tientallen miljoen en voor een zender zijn peanuts, afgerond nihil.

Ook in Rusland zit op de FM (auto) radioos nog gewoon AM, MG en LG.

De masten in Junglingster staan nog overeind..........
