The Belles of Normandy sing the station ident; Roy Plomley (of Desert Island Discs fame) introduces the artistes from the Bradford Alhambra, and another melody-packed hour - sponsored by a patent medicine - begins on the commercial radio station that, back in the 1930s, was often more popular than the majestic BBC. The man behind it all was called, improbably, Captain Leonard Plugge. And in this programme, Dominic Sandbrook tells the story of this clever, enterprising and subversive man. For twelve long years since the release of her The Red Shoes album, Kate Bush's hungry legion of fans were drip-fed scraps of information about her new projects. The famine ended with the release of Aerial in 2005. A double album of breath-taking scope and beauty, it soon established itself as a contemporary classic, ranking alongside Kate's best work such as Hounds of Love. In Talking With Kate, Mark Radcliffe connects directly with the reluctant genius who composed this great album. The programme is a beautifully-crafted conversation with an iconic woman who rarely talks publicly about her life and work. [verborgen inhoud]

Three bands influenced rock legend Alice Cooper more than any other: The Yardbirds, The Kinks, and The Who. All of them British. In this documentary, Alice tells the story of how The Beatles' triumphant arrival in New York City on 7 February 1964, opened the doors to the British Invasion and changed American music forever. From 1964 to 1966, Britain sent a stream of hits across the Atlantic. Behind The Beatles; Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Dave Clark Five, the Animals, Manfred Mann, Petula Clark, Freddie and the Dreamers, Herman's Hermits, the Rolling Stones and the Troggs all topped Billboard's singles chart. These invaders had borrowed American rock music…

John Sebastian takes a nostalgic journey around Greenwich Village, New York, telling the story of a particularly creative period in modern music history. John was born and raised in Greenwich Village and, while still at school in the early 50s, it became a focal point for a group of writers, poets, artists, and students known as the Beat Generation. Inspired by what he saw and heard around him, John became immersed in the folk and club scene that subsequently blossomed. His skills on guitar and harmonica made him an instrumental component of the folk scene and he worked with Bob Dylan, Judy Collins and Tim Hardin, before forming the The Lovin' Spoonful in 1965 and e…

From the 1960s through to the present day, funk music reverberates through popular culture. Whether it's in fashion, street language, TV, the movies or pop music, the far reaching influence of funk is everywhere. In this three-part series American actress Pam Grier takes listeners on an historic funk odyssey. She's been a fan of the music since she starred in the so-called Blaxploitation movies of the 1970s. Back then, funk was not only the soundtrack to her films but also to a vital time in American history. It was a time of self discovery, struggle and social change. The music reflected all of that. In this first part, Pam goes back to the source, when funk - in…

Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who and a Wilson Pickett fan, tells the story of the soul legend. Contributors include Wilson's brother Max; his ex-partner Dovie Hall; and soul stars like Bobby Womack and Eddie Floyd, who experienced the exceptional singing talent first hand; as well as the wild side, which earned him the nickname "The Wicked Pickett". Pickett died in 2006, aged 64, but he left a legacy of classic hits like Mustang Sally, The Land of 1,000 Dances, and In The Midnight Hour. He was determined to be a singing star from an early age and his brother Max remembers how Wilson would always be getting into fights, whilst also singing gospel in church. Little Ric…

Don Letts tells the story of the influential UK-based record label that helped Jamaican music reach a wider audience. Trojan Records is known as reggae's Motown and had a huge hand in introducing Jamaican music to the British public. In its hey-day of the late 60s to the mid-70s, Trojan chalked up nearly 30 hit singles, released the legendary Tighten Up compilation series and launched Jamaican acts in the UK such as Jimmy Cliff, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Bob and Marica, and Dave and Ansel Collins. The huge volume of records they released in this period made the name Trojan synonymous with classic rocksteady and reggae cuts. In 1970 alone, Trojan released 500 singles,…
