Vrijdagmiddag 18 Augustus 1989  ontdekte ik, luisterend naar Caroline, dat er iets aan de hand was, toen ik in de middag afstemde hoorde ik Caroline op 558 en op 819 en later maakte het Caroline nieuws duidelijk dat er toch problemen waren. Dus.... partij lege (Fuji) cassette's in huis gehaald en opnemen maar. Zaterdag moest ik in de tuin mijn plantenbak metselen, dus liet ik alvast wat banden meelopen en rond 14 uur hoorde ik buiten op de meegenomen portable radio, tijdens het metselen, dat het uit de hand liep bij Caroline / Radio 819. Troffel weggelegd en naar de "Radio shack" gegaan en alles afgeluisterd.... met als resultaat     hard geworden, niet gebruikt cement, en een boze echtgenote die graag de plantenbak afgemaakt had gezien. Tja, zeezenders freaks hebben veel over voor hun hobby, zelfs de toorn van een boze echtgenote....   

Roel, ik wacht "met smart" wat je morgen online zet.

Some interesting things that happened on 18th August 1989 (not included in these recordings):

On Caroline 558 at around 10.30am, Chris Kennedy took over from Nigel Harris and played various songs as a code to the organisers on land (including "Imagine" and "Lady in Red").

Also that morning, on Radio 819, the Abba song "Ring Ring" was played non-stop for almost half an hour as an urgent signal for the organisers in the Netherlands to contact the ship (via cellular telephone).

 

 

A couple of things that are fortunately included in these recordings:

In the first Caroline recording: Dave Richards oversleeps and is late to start his show. Whilst he's waiting for Dave to arrive, Bruce Munroe uses (slightly rude) innuendo to accuse him of dreaming about ladies!

In the last recording (Caroline 819): Chris Kennedy is evidently very tired and plays the whole of side 1 of "Frampton Comes Alive" uninterrupted.

 

Then he pauses for a very unusual "short interlude" which starts with an LA promo by Mike Hagler (uses "If You've Got Love" by Dave Mason as the background music). This is then followed by Shirley Temple performing "At the Codfish Ball" (audio from the film Captain January). Finally there's the Dave Fisher cart played (where he laughs and says "oh, wot?").

Dave Fisher ("Dave the Fish") was a local fisherman who also tendered the Ross Revenge. The cart of him was, I believe, used as a signal that they wanted him to come to the ship. Probably this was preceded by the Shirley Temple routine to get his attention (the whole song is about dancing fish). He did indeed arrive the following afternoon (during the raid) with some journalists. Possibly this stopped the raiders from smashing any more equipment.

The LA promo could possibly be a secret signal for the Caroline organisers on land... it's not one that was very commonly played on-air.
