Ben allereerst hartelijk dank voor deze kwalitatief mooie opnames uit het archief van Eugene Bruggeman. Uit deze periode zijn er weinig opnames bewaard gebleven.

Ik ben het met je eens dat deze opname van 2 april 1974 moet zijn. De doorslag geeft voor mij zijn opmerking dat hij over 10 dagen op bezoek gaat bij personen in de UK. Dit feit valt te controleren. Andy ging daadwerkelijk van boord op 11 april 1974.

Ik hoor, net als jij, Andy zeggen dat dit de eerste top 40 is. Wellicht bedoelt hij dat dit de eerste is die wordt uitgezonden en dus feitelijk de tweede is. In dit geval staat de eerste top 40 correct bij Jon op de website, maar zou die nooit zijn uitgezonden.

De opname van Mike Hagler heb ik ook nog beluisterd, maar verder geen hints over de datum gevonden. Wél heb ik diverse keren het stukje afgespeeld op 13:58 waarin hij het woord 'second' uitspreekt. Ik kan het niet goed volgen omdat het voor mij te snel gaat. Ik meen te horen: 'April the second', maar misschien wil het dat ook graag!

En dan te bedenken dat ik dit in Januari 2010 al gedigitaliseerd heb en er verder nooit naar had omgekeken 🫢

I was listening to Caroline when I suddenly heard for the first time that Andy announced the death of French President Georges Pompidou; That happened on April 2nd at about 09 45 pm. Sorry but I can't give the good Date

Sorry Ben, no recording. I was only listening and watching tv at the same time, but it struck me to hear for the very first time this annoucement live on Caroline

I have come across a coupole of recordings of Caroline 2 on 259 meters where a Dutch voice requests to send reception reports to Caroline House The Hague. They have been recorded after the BBC broadcast the 18th episode of the Story of Pop, which might have been around mid January 1974.

No sorry, I listened often Caroline 389/259 in June/July 1973 and have some recordings.

In 1974 I was more listening to Atlantis, MiAmigo, RNI & Veronica

I listened to Caroline quite a bit during this time (I was 12 years old). They may well have made tests after Radio Mi Amigo finished broadcasts at 2100 during the first week in January 1974. Of course Radio Seagull started on 7th January and changed name to Caroline the following month. I don't recall hearing any tests but they may have happened late night/early morning.

Het wordt dus 2 april 1974, ik had nog 7 dagen avond luisteren naar Caroline. Op 10 april 74 trouwde ik met Vrouw Marre en werd van de ene op de andere dag een pantoffelheld die natuurlijk handje vasthoudend op de bank s avonds mee moest kijken naar Peyton Place ipv die "obscure opruiende muziek", althans volgens mijn toen verse echtgenote. "Schenk nog maar eens koffie in Paul" waren de gevleugelde woorden s avonds.

The date of the recording is 26th March 1974. The ELP Special was 27th March and was the day after these recordings.

Thanks for the recordings Ben. There doesn't seem to be a lot of Caroline recordings from this period. maybe people were more into Atlantis and RNI. I remember the signal at night on 1187 khz was the best of all the pirates at home on the west coast of Scotland. RNI could be good some nights and bad others. Atlantis was the same but did well for a low power station, especially on 1331 khz.

Hi Ian, in the mean time I also listened to the April 7th recording. This was broadcast before April 13th. The Caroline roadshow promo is about performances of April 13 and 14 and Andy will be there, so for me that means that Andy returning to shore on the 11th, still holds. Now if the date of this recording would have been April 10th, it would be exactly two weeks after March 27th and two weeks before April 24th. So this means that as far as I can see there is no more conflicting data, except for Andy mentioning that he will be meeting people in 10 days but maybe that was the initial plan and changed later on. So, the date of the Top 40 indeed must be March 26th and the ELP special must be March 27th. This also takes away the concern I had with Eric remarks regarding Presedent Pompidou. So I fully agree with you, these must be the correct dates. Congratulations!!

Following Eric's comment about the French president, I also continued searching through the available recordings. The recording from April 7th provides a definitive answer.

I had some other personal matters to attend to yesterday, so I didn't respond.

I have a partial recording of episode 15 in the archive. It aired on Saturday, January 5, 1974, between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM (UK time).

@Ben, double-check which episode you mean. You mentioned episode 18 here, and episode 15 in another message.

Thanks, Hans! It was episode 18, so most probably it aired on January 26th, 1974. In the mean time Ian did research and found out that the Caroline test transmission is from May 30/31st 1973.

I'll also upload the episode 18 recording.

Het verhaal krijgt een staartje. 10 april getrouwd en s avonds op 11 april zaten wij in ons kersverse huis aan het Baken 29 < geen grap> in Groningen. Vrouw Marre zette de eerste koffie, Douwe Roodmerk uit Joure Fryslan. Ik keek dwars door het bakkie koffie en dacht dat het thee was. Maar volgens Vrouw was het koffie, prima gezet. In Groningen noemen we sukkse koffie joegel. 12 april was ik aan de beurt en zette koffie. Vrouw gooide na 1 slok het kopje leeg onder gebrom "dit is buskruit". Groot probleem dus, huwelijken kunnen stuk lopen om koffie meningsverschillen. 13 April gingen we naar Aldi en kochten daar de duurste oploskoffie van het Aldi huismerk, de goud versie. Vrouw 1 schepje per kopje, voor Paul 2 schepjes per kopje, probleem opgelost. En na 51,5 jaar huwelijk doen we dat nog steeds. Echter onze kinderen weigeren absoluut koffie bij ons te drinken en vragen thee. Dat bocht drinken we niet horen we. De duurste koffie uit High Tec machines laten we aan ons voorbijgaan, wij vragen dan om thee of water.

Prachtige opname overigens, Caroline maakte het verschil in de zomer van 74. Gelukkig kan ik de gemiste avonduren Caroline al langere tijd inhalen maar deze kende ik nog niet. Archer en Hagler....prima prima.
