Sadly Robin died in 2018. I knew him from working at Radio ERI in Cork, Ireland where he was our engineer. A great guy!

I asked Robin about the transmitters. He said they were taken from the ship and put in storage just outside Tripoli. The intention was to use them again on land, but Robin did not think this happened.

I learned that the transmitters from the Mebo 2 were indeed put in storage, not in Tripoli but in Benghazi. One of the old 10 kW Veronica-transmitters has been used from Benghazi on 675 kHz. This info was given to me by the embassy of Libya in The Hague many years ago.

A VERY POOR STATE I'M SURE. THE 100KW WAS A PROTOTYPE WHICH I THINK WAS 
BUILT IN ITALY  WITH THE SERIAL 002. I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY MORE 100KW SETS 
BEING BUILT AFTER THAT. I HEARD THAT THE PHASE MODULATOR WAS NOT POPULAR. 
THESE DAYS IT WOULD BE A VERY RELIABLE SYSTEM WITH MODERN VALVE-LESS 
TECHNOLOGY, HOWEVER, THERE IS NO DEMAND FOR AM NOWADAYS OF COURSE. THE 
AMPLIPHASE METHOD WAS QUITE EFFICIENT AT THE TIME, AROUND 60% OVERALL.

Of course the rigs have no commercial value at all now, but from a historical point of view it would be nice to find out if they are still there, certainly the Veronica 10 kW Continental ones. 

Maybe a TV documantary: "In search of the source millions used to listen to".

(However Libya is not the place you want to be)

 

I did hear an Arabic programme on 675, after switch off in Holland on Sept 1 2015, could have been from Benghazi, this is listed with 100 kW.

Could be the 100 kW transmitter BTH-100B. The transmitter of RNI.
