Can anyone tell me when Caroline Overdrive finished? The last recording I have is 3rd January 1987 and I wondered if anyone has any recordings after this date.

Overdrive[edit]

On January 1, 1986 DJ Tom Anderson, who had been heavily involved with the station's 1983 relaunch, began Caroline Overdrive on the 963 kHz transmitter after the end of Viewpoint. Overdrive carried a wide selection of "alternative" music, the only apparent rule being that it should provide an alternative to the mainstream programming on 558. Presentation was uncluttered, with a minimum of DJ chatter and few jingles. One critic described the service as being similar to a John Peel show except that it ran all night.

Increases in the number of religious programmes meant that as the year progressed the start of Overdrive was pushed back from 8 p.m. to 9 and later 9:30.

Towards the end of 1986 a combination of transmitter maintenance and lack of direct involvement by Anderson meant that Overdrive was frequently off the air. The last Overdrive programme was broadcast in February 1987 under the title "Testing 963", parodying the newly relaunched Laser's test broadcasts. After this no further alternative programming was heard on 963.

I think this date is correct, but using the name Caroline Overdrive is not right.

Yes the date is correct Simon says the date and the time is 2330-0103 on a Sunday. According to Pirate Radio Hall of Fame Simon only began on Caroline on 20th August for 6 weeks.

On a Facebook post earlier this year, Caroline DJ Paul Graham said that there had been a one-off Overdrive programme which was broadcast by Nigel 'Skull' Roberts, aka Bagone, in summer 1987. Nigel has confirmed this, adding that it was when he went out to the Ross Revenge to retrieve Tom Anderson's records for him, but the show was not advertised on air in advance.

The last Overdrive programs that i have heard, where a few nights during mid June 1987.

hier kom ik een opname tegen met een verkeerde datum 30 febr 89 met Tom Anderson op tape tgv 25 jaar Caroline: vermoedelijk is een datum van 26 maart 89 correcter.

I do have some recording I made in January 1987, which I'll post asap!

OVERDRIVE

In the early hours of tuesday, 6  October,  1987  "all sorts of music" was heard on    963 kHz.  At midnight,  when the Viewpoint tapes ended,  Chris Kennedy closed down the station but the transmitter stayed on and music began.

 

None of the music was announced,  but an occasional unidentified voice was heard making remarks such as "You're with Overdrive - R.I.P."  and You're with The Shadow".

Also Overdrive and  Radio Mi Amigo (!)  jingles were played.  

 

At  03.20 a voice thought to be Chris Kennedy was heard to say "Overdrive,  over and out" and the music ended at  03.27.
