- ik heb deze opname al jarenlang in het archief zitten met de datum 29 juni 1973, maar die datum kan ook niet kloppen;

- maar er is iets vreemds aan de hand;

- ik denk dat het Dennis King is, maar die was enkel vanaf het voorjaar tot zomer 1973 op de MV Mi Amigo;

- toch twijfel ik of het niet iemand anders is, want;

- in de opname op 47 min. hoor je Hot Chocolate - Emma 'high in the charts' en dat was in juni/juli 1974;

- Dennis King zou toen weg zijn;

- op 1 min. wordt genoemd dat het een vrijdag is;

- op 17 min. wordt genoemd dat er vanmiddag is gezwommen;

- en op 17 min. wordt genoemd dat vanaf 21:00 uur Andy Archer komt met Schools Out en om 00:00 Johnny Jason komt;

- deze laatste match qua 'schedule' doet zich voor in juni 1973, maar ook in juni 1974;

- vanaf 21 mei 1974 was Johnny Jason na bijna een jaar afwezigheid weer terug;

- woensdag 6 maart 1974: is geen vrijdag en te koud om te zwemmen;

- ik kom zelf uit op begin juni 1974 als het niet Dennis King is;

- @Robin Westhof wil/kan jij jouw uitgebreide Caroline-kennis als hulp inzetten?

Dank voor jou attentheid Martin. Ik heb de opname van 6 maart 1974 destijds weer verwijderd en bij die van 29 juni 1973 een aantekening gemaakt. Door de bijdrage van Gerard liep ik daar vanmiddag tegen aan.

Bijvoorbeeld K-Tel, powerhits kwam eind 1973 op de markt en vanaf februari 1974 werden er, ook op de andere zeezenders, commercials voor gedraaid. Dat wijst ook op een datum in 1974, net als het nummer van Hot Chocolate, maar volgens de geschiedschrijving was Dennis King in dat jaar niet actief als dj. Ik ken zijn stem onvoldoende en, in dit geval, kan ik hem ook niet toewijzen aan een andere dj.

Beste Hans,

I have a file of Dennis King dated Friday 2nd August 1974 1900-1952. In the intro he introduces himself as Dennis King for 2 hours then it will be Andy Archer with the School's Programme. Comments?

Dat programma is denk opgenomen in de  Record World studio (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam) Andy Archer en Graham Gill namen daar daar ook hun tape programma's op.

 

In 1973 nog een brief naar hem  (Dennis King) gestuurd en ook antwoord gekregen. 🙂

Januari 1973, ik vond hem (toen) op de Nederlandstalige service een van de leukste dj's om naar te luisteren, vandaar dat ik hem ook schreef.

Twee jaar geleden heb ik hem samen met o.a. Bob Noakes ontmoet hier in België.

Samen met Ray Robinson hebben we de opname kunnen dateren op vrijdag 24 mei 1974, 19:00 - 19:52 uur.

 

From the information given in the links during the show, we know that date is wrong, and between us we've pinned the correct date down to being Friday 24th May 1974.

 

It's quite an interesting recording for several reasons.

 

Firstly, it is the only known recording of Dennis King on the Mi Amigo during 1974 (or on Caroline at all, for that matter).  Previously we only had recordings of him in early 1973, and then with the pre-recorded Berlin Service later in 1975.  Dennis was German, and in 1974 he worked mostly in Caroline's office on land, behind the scenes.

 

Secondly, Dennis makes reference to the captain having a model plane which he flew around the ship, and that it had been a warm and sunny day, so they had been swimming in the North Sea.

 

Thirdly , it's an oldies show, with just one current song (Hot Chocolate - Emma) and a couple of album tracks.

 

Fourthly , he comments about the studios being used for the first time with a technician to cue the records - it was not a 'self-op' show as you would normally expect.

 

Fifthly , he mentions that following him will be Andy Archer with School's Out (2100-2400), Johnny Jason (0000-0300), and Micky Mercer (0300-0600).  Johnny Jason was heard on Radio Seagull from the Mi Amigo in January and February that year, but then he went to America to look for a job.  Not finding anything suitable, he returned first to London, and then went out to the ship again with Andy Archer on Tuesday 21st May.

 

And sixthly, Dennis and Andy had been at some Scottish Brandy, and so the presentation is perhaps not quite as coherent as would normally have been the case!
