Ik heb zelfs nauwelijks iets meegekregen van die hele Ross Revenge-tijd. In de jaren tachtig luisterde ik radio via een stereo fm-tuner, net als iedereen in mijn kennissenkring. Op zeker moment kwam er kabel, dan kon je ook buitenlandse stations beluisteren. Het leukst vond ik nog om BBC-tv te kijken. Het was voor het eerst dat je op tv een behoorlijk filmaanbod kreeg.

In fact I used to listen regularly to Radio Netherlands on 5955 kHz (very powerful signal in the UK), so it does seem strange that they would use that frequency. Anoraks UK of 1st November 1987 gives more details on this: "Radio Caroline 558 was heard on Wednesday [28th October] on 6220 kHz, and again on Thursday [29th October], on 5955 kHz. 19 Augustus 1989... een zonnige Zaterdagmiddag.. Volgens mijn toenmalige echtgenote was dat een mooie dag dat ik mijn metselwerk aan de nieuwe bloemenbak in de tuin maar eens af moest maken. De avond ervoor veel opnames gemaakt van Caroline 558 omdat je wist dat er "stront aan de knikker was". Enfin, de speciekuip en troffel ter hand genomen en uiteraard de portable erbij met Caroline op 558.... en toen.. de eerste oproep van Chicago gedurende het programma van Caroline Martin. Met als gevolg... metseltroffel de speciekuip in en ik naar de hobbykamer om snel een tape op de Revox te leggen. Uiteraard daar blijven luisteren, met een echtgenote die niet zoveel had met mijn radiohobby en langzaam stoom uit neusgaten begon te produceren betreffende het inmiddels hard geworden cement.... Och, je hebt wat over voor je hobby. En toen was het plotsklaps over... 558 was nog net een paar seconden langer in de lucht dan 819... je hoorde ze nog even tegen de microfoon tikken en roepen "yes, it's gone..."... Was even moeilijk te bevatten dat het over was.... Die middag verder, met erg weinig zin trouwens, bloembak afgemaakt.. ding staat er nog steeds en ik weet nog precies bij welke steen ik toen op 19 Augustus ophield om naar Caroline te luisteren. Britain Radio verschilde toch veel van 390. Opvolger 355 werd nog iets losbandiger. Helaas werden de schitterende Br R jingles niet meer gebruikt na de verandering van naam. Over geheime formats gesproken....ook wijlen Gordon Mc Lendon <oa KLIF Dallas en architect voor Radio Nord en Big L > verklaarde toen hij nog leefde dat hij nog 1 format in zijn trucendoos had. Welk is nooit bekend geworden. Op het gebied van easylistening formats had hij oa KABL S Francisco bedacht in de begin 60s, geniaal station. Nu nog via internet, heb inmiddels vele uren opgenomen met het great American songbook format. Op internet is ook KLUX hedentendage een formidabel sweet music station uit Corpus Christi. Zoek maar eens op. Maar ik dwaal af.

It was probably not Gert Jan Smit who chose the frequency but one of the Ross Revenge engineers (maybe Peter Chicago). The first Caroline tests on short-wave were on 6273 kHz in 1985 using a marine transmitter. Then other frequencies were tried in 1987: I've seen many frequencies mentioned: 9940, 9950, 6210, 6205, 6220 and 5955 kHz. There's some confusion about which transmissions came from the ship, because some land based pirates would relay Caroline programmes occasionally. Also in September 1987, it was reported that Johan Maasbach sent out details of a new radio station starting soon: "World Mission Radio" on 6205 kHz using 10kW, however in November 1987 the frequency was given as 6210 kHz and it was supposed to start "within about 14 days" (then the mast collapse intervened, of course). When they resumed testing on short-wave in early 1988, they started with 6210 kHz. At the beginning of March 1988, an Anoraks UK contributor mentioned about 6215.5 kHz being an emergency channel and that splatter from 6210 kHz was a problem for RNI in the 1970s (they were jammed by Rogaland Radio in Norway. Then RNI moved to 6205 kHz and the jamming stopped). Caroline later tested both 6205 kHz and 6215 kHz (the former was already used by HCJB in Ecuador and the latter had some SSB interference). They settled on 6215 kHz just before the launch of World Mission Radio and stayed on that frequency until August 1989. Also interesting: "The frequency of 6215kHz was a concern. I recall at the time photocopying a few pages from respected utility expert, Jorg Klingenfuss, and trying to send them to Chicago via a friend down south. Whether these photo copies ever reached the ship is anyone's guess, as the station remained on 6215, a secondary emergency frequency. This was certainly not a clever idea, and various dxers who had some knowledge of SW tried to tell Caroline not to use the channel. Even if the frequency wasn't really used, it was another excuse from the authorities about interference." The OCZ seemed much more concerned with closing Radio 819.

Niet achteraf Jan, tussen 64 en 68 was ik al in staat om de verschillen in sound en format tussen de stations te zien en te begrijpen. BBC Light beluisterde ik in 62 al met plezier als mijn broer zijn Flips transistor er op afstemde. Wat zowel de Beeb als H1 en 2 boden in die tijd was geen shit. Maar er ontbrak iets en in dat gat sprongen de zeezenders. Via de BBC luisterde ik met hetzelfde gemak op 1500 meter langegolf naar de scheepvaartberichten als Mrs Dales Diary < hoorspel, toppunt van Britse kneuterigheid> en naar Alan Freeman top 20. Klagen doe ik niet, tis simpelweg mijn idee over de Britse zeezenders en BBC tussen 64 en 68. Op jonge leeftijd kreeg ik thuis niet alleen de levertraan met de paplepel naar binnen maar ook alle mogelijke soorten muziek en vormen van radio. O....en mijn moeder gaf me naast de levertraan ook nog een rauw geklutst ei, goed voor de weerstand zei ze. Gelukkig had ik nog nooit van salmonella gehoord. Natuurlijk wisten ze dat, maar voor de BEEB waren ze acceptabel, zijn ze ook altijd gebleven. Okay, Everett werd af en toe even in de hoek gezet. Afrondend....Big L was niet echt mijn kop thee, maar een goed station zeker wel. Extreem winstgevend voor de Texas olieboeren die de revenuen belastingvrij via de Bahama's binnen zagen lopen. En zoals we weten hebben de meeste Texanen olie en een 7 liter 12 cylinder motor in het hoofd ipv ... enfin u weet wel. Federale belasting betalen willen ze niet, wel met hun bakbeesten over de door federale belastingen betaalde snelwegen cruissen. Big L MK2 < SRE van dezelfde groep investeerders> flopte hopeloos. Er was door Big L al invulling gegeven aan het fenomeen dat in het land der blinden éénoog koning is.

Dit is allemaal achteraf. Je moet je eens voorstellen wat voor impact dit had: Moeders wil is wet, allerhande door de geestelijkheid gepushte programma's, hoorspelen, ochtendgymnastiek, de groenteman, de waterhoogten van hedenmorgen, klassiek, stichtelijk en alle andere shit wat er op Hilversum geprogrammeerd was. Niets anders. En dan heb je zo ineens Top40, horizontale programmering, jingles, waanzinnige DJ's. En dan zul je klagen als eenvoudige scholier op net beginnend leerling ambachtsman dat Radio London te commercieel is, of te glad, of niet avontuurlijk genoeg? Ik was erg blij met de keuze op de middengolf toen, het was een heel gemis na 15 augustus 1967! Jan

John, I see now that I am wrong. They were not broadcasting on 192, but on 259 meters. The tests are without mentioned a station-name, but as from the 6st January 1974 they called them (again) Radio Seagull. Sorry for Roel and Vincent for giving the wrong information. Gerard

John, It is 192 and not Radio Caroline, because at that time the DJ's on board didn't mentioned the name Caroline. They only say that the test programmes are coming from the MV Mi Amigo. And 192 is the frequency they broadcast at that time. Gerard

Ik weet niet precies hoe je dit download Juul. Via Mixcloud downloader mischien? Wat ik meestal doe is het afspelen en opnieuw opnemen. Overigens is de volgende link het overzicht van 10 jaar BBC Radio One, onnavolgbaar aanééngesproken door wijlen Alan Freeman. Hoorbaar wordt de evolutie van het station tussen 67 en 77. Een evolutie waar Big L nooit aan toe kwam in de 2 en driekwart jaar van het bestaan. Mischien een beetje met de introductie van Peels Perfumed Garden. 10 jaar Radio One

Bedankt voor je aanvulling, Douwe. We gaan verder waar we gisteren gebleven waren en dat is met een serie foto's, die Douwe maakte op 8 en 9 Juni 1977 in Playa de Aro. Dat zijn de foto's DD_CN_403 - DD_CN_419, met de viering van de verjaardag van Bokkebroek: En plaatjes van de Mi Amigo familie in Playa de Aro: En de laatste serie foto's uit het fotoboek van Douwe is gemaakt op 23 Mei 1982 in Playa de Aro bij Sonipro. Dat zijn de foto's DD_CN_452 - DD_CN_462 met onder andere deze foto van de Sonipro "outfit": Nu zitten er qua nummering nog een paar relatief grote gaten in het fotoboek van Douwe. Daar zitten de foto's die Douwe nam van het TV scherm tijdens de eerste Veronica uitzending op TV, tijdens het uitzenden van een Mi Amigo Special en tijdens de uitzending van The Day the music died. Van alle drie deze uitzendingen voegen we voor elk één compilatie met elk een paar beelden van de TV uitzending toe als "placeholder", waarbij het foto album van Douwe met 400 foto's compleet is. Deze compilaties zijn DD_CN_158 - 216, DD_CN_274 - 293 en DD_CN_420 - 430. Tenslotte wil ik graag Douwe bedanken voor het beschikbaar stellen van zijn prachtige foto's, Juul voor de aanvullingen en correcties, Bert en Douwe voor de correcties en allen die gereageerd hebben in dit draadje. Afkomstig uit een ander forum de messcherpe kijk op Caroline blunders van de Ierse maverick door P Moore.... Caroline was put out of business when the big mast fell as it was a daft thing to build in the first place. A shorter mast or two masts may not have been so impressive but Ronan prioritised image over longevity. Had a sensible robust mast been built and if the money thus saved ( that which did not end up in Lichtenstein ) was used to keep the ships registration fully in place, there may have been no raid. I do not know 100% if it was a stupid idea to broadcast the SW on a marine distress frequency but I guess it did not help. But that was Ronan, ducking and diving, telling lies, keeping secrets, never letting the right hand know what the left hand was doing, always dreaming that the next mad scheme would be the one that worked. In 2006 after softening me up by praising my long term efforts, he switched to blagging me in to putting 50% of the supporters money in to a Lichtenstein company under his remote control. When I refused, his anger was frightening. PM. en het gaat verder...... Ronan wanted 558Khz from the outset. So many times he told me ' Hey, baby, 50K on 558 '. This was his dream outcome and those around him said that the masive mast was needed to perfectly suit that frequency. But as Tom Anderson sabotaged Ronan's wish for a Gold format, Peter C also decided to use 319 ( it is a good frequency that we have used before ! ). So, much time passed and only the capitulation of Laser made 558 available. I am not a marine architect but just work on common sense. Ronan was driven by ' why not ' but my mantra is ' what if '. To be fair, Ronan may not have thought that the UK would extend territorial limits and nobody expected the 87 hurricane. As I am sure everyone knows, ships ' pitch ' fore and aft and ' roll ' side to side. The rolling motion is more extreme and Revenge is only 38ft 6ins wide. With the weight of the tower and the pendulum effect, the forces acting on it were extreme and it was entirely reliant on the side stays. Now I don't know ( maybe others can advise ) if the stays were ever tensioned and made to match the tension on each opposite stay. I suspect not. I speculate ( only that ) that the hurricane fractured some insulators on the port side and de-tensioned the stays which is why the mast fell over the stbd side. Anyway it was in the sea. Ronan said that an identical mast would be made and flown out by helicopter, which just showed that he had nil knowledge of engineering. But the ' what if ' factor came and bit him as he knew that if the ship went inshore anywhere, it would be impounded by creditors due to the way the project was funded in the early 80's. So Revenge was trapped at sea. Then came the conundrum of who would pay for any new mast of any design. If money was salted away in Lichtenstein this could not be admitted. So I guess that Lotto 6/49 were persuaded to fund the miracle Valcom glass fibre tower that was 100% unsuitable and failed beyond repair the first time it was erected. Had it been structurally sound, it was doomed anyway being rated for only 5KW. Nobody held their hands up to say they thought it would handle 50KW. So it came down to the Aussie who liked to be called Mick Dundee to find secondhand towers in a metal scrap yard at £250 a section. Nobody congratulated him. When the station was operating again it was soon raided, as discussed in a previous posting. A long saga of things getting buggered up time and time again. I am still cursed by 500+ tons of cement in the hull that was poured to counter balance the sodding mast. Now she sits far too deep at the stern that will hamper dry docking, while I hope I don't need a sharp intake of breath when a surveyor orders me to break up and remove the cement to check the condition of the tank tops. Ah, the romance of radio from the ocean ! PM. Vooral het verzoek van R o R in 2006 om 50% van de supporters donaties op de rekening in Liechtenstein te storten was shocking. De Ier had de controle over de rekening.

Ik heb de naam nogal veel te bewaren. Omdat ons heel archief naar B&G gaat ben ik nog steeds doende om de boel te "schonen'. In augustus 1999 gingen we voor het eerst sinds 1974 “uitzenden” vanuit Lapershoek. We deden de laatste week nog maar eens over. We riepen de luisteraars op om reacties per fax op te sturen. Die had je toen nog. Dat deden ze massaal. Ik ben nu bezig al die faxen die ik destijds bewaard door te kijken en evt. te bewaren. Of weggooien. En een hele stapel kwam ik vandaag weer tegen..................Er zitten er ook nog bij van forum leden hier. Een aantal dacht dat we toen de tijd hadden om die allemaal te antwoorden. Niet dus. Ze stuurden soms wel 4 faxen soms ook met andere namen. En deze fax is wel heel erg actueel. KINK die de evt. ether freq. "weggeeft"....................HI We gaan terug naar 1999...................
